I have a coworker – a relatively new hire brought on in a supervisor role – who has alienated everyone else we work with because of their massively unearned superiority complex. Literally every other employee has expressed relief and joy when they find out that they don’t have to share a shift with this person. This coworker has been trying to turn the rest of the staff against me, because I’m the only one who has been calling their behaviour out to upper management, but as I already stated, the staff don’t like this person, and so these attempts of theirs have resulted in everyone just getting more annoyed with them. HOWEVER, the boss recently took me into confidence on why this particular person was brought on in the first place. This is a new boss, who had taken over from the previous boss, and our previous boss had worked with this problem coworker years before. The old boss brought the coworker on as a favour to the coworker, so that when they move on from this place (hopefully soon!), our establishment will be the first on their resume, because they were fired from their previous job. The reason? They fell for a scam that ended with them depositing a not insubstantial sum of the establishment’s money into the scammer’s bitcoin wallet. I will admit, while I was shocked that they fell for this type of scam, I was not shocked that they went through with it, as they are the type of person to ask forgiveness and not permission, which is a behaviour model that has earned them no friends here. Despite the current boss having spoken to them about their poor behaviour in the workplace, they have done very little to actually try to improve relations with the rest of the staff. And while this does continue to make it frustrating to work with this particular person, the knowledge that they were duped by so transparent a scam does take some of the edge off.
